When a classroom debate turns into a full-on constitutional crisis, four high school students find themselves possessed by the spirits of America’s founding fathers—with only one period to rework the nation’s most sacred document. In Reconstitution: A Revolutionary Comedy, the classroom becomes the convention floor as students argue the finer points of freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, and the three-fifths compromise—all while trapped in powdered wigs, awkward cloaks, and increasingly unstable accents. Meanwhile, their classmates are caught between filming it all for TikTok and actually participating in the debate.

What begins as a farce quickly becomes a thoughtful reckoning with the Constitution’s legacy, as students challenge outdated ideals, confront modern injustices, and imagine a more inclusive future—without losing their sense of humor.

Witty, fast-paced, and wildly theatrical, Reconstitution is perfect for student ensembles ready to get loud, get weird, and maybe even save democracy... before the bell rings.

“With time running out and the students’ fates (and summer plans) hanging in the balance, the founders must navigate the lasting legacy of American ideals—all while dealing with TikToks and classroom cliques.” - WNCW

“Uses high-energy farce to tackle the enduring—and often awkward—legacy of America’s foundational ideals, all within the familiar chaos of a modern high school setting.a funny, frantic, and far-more-revealing debate than any history teacher could have planned.” - Black Mountain News

Gavestudents a valuable opportunity to grow and stretch as young artists. I'm always grateful when playwrights create space for young performers to shine.” - Zoe Zelonky, Education Director, Asheville Community Theatre

“A clever and energetic new comedy that takes a simple classroom assignment and turns it into a wild trip through American history. The play blends sharp humor with just the right amount of thoughtfulness. Beneath the comedy are sincere questions about how we deal with the imperfections in our institutions. The play invites you to consider what compromise looks like, who gets included and how old ideas hold up in a changing world.” - Blainesworld

I was genuinely impressed by the storytelling, which explored the concept of rewriting our Constitution with clarity, balance, and real thoughtfulness. … Polished and engaging, making complex ideas accessible in a way that encourages understanding rather than division.” - Cheryl Hyde, Director, Black Mountain Chamber of Commerce
