It's the summer of 1980, the gas crisis is biting, and high school senior Steven is desperate. With his rabbi father suddenly laid off and college tuition looming, Steven tags along with his star-quarterback best friend, Greg, to snag a summer landscaping job. But there’s a catch: the crew chief can only afford to hire one person. To settle the score, the boss’s twin children split the boys onto competing crews in a high-stakes, hilarious week-long work battle.
Driven by a desire to stand on his own outside of Greg’s shadow—and a sudden crush on the boss's devout daughter, Christina—Steven resorts to absurd "dirty work" and shameless credit-snatching to oust his best friend. As post-hole diggers fly, cement mixers mix, and Christian faith collides with teenage ambition, Steven learns the hard way that cutting corners to win in life only leads to progress going backwards.
