From its first pages, the script stood out for its emotional clarity and urgency. At the heart of the play is a young girl navigating grief in a world that has not given her the language to express it. Rather than offering easy answers, Her Beautiful Sound asks a deeper question: what happens when a young person is expected to carry pain in silence--and what changes when that silence is finally broken?
The theme of this year’s contest, A Better World, invited writers to imagine stories that confront hardship while pointing toward hope. Her Beautiful Sound embodies that mission beautifully. It is a play about reclaiming voice as an act of survival, about refusing invisibility, and about the power of storytelling to create space for healing. It reminds us that a better world is not built through grand gestures alone, but through the intimate, individual act of being heard.
To celebrate the play’s selection, we are offering 50% off the script fee through July 1, making it easier for schools and organizations to bring this powerful new work to their students and audiences.
