Ed Levy Plays

Ed Levy is an award-winning lyricist and librettist whose musicals have appeared at Lincoln Center, Theater Row in New York City, Arlington Theater in Arlington, Texas, Signature Theater, The Players Theater, and others. He wrote the libretto and lyrics for Bystander, which won Best Short Play or Musical at NY Summerfest, Hudson Guild Theater, in 2017 and Best Music at Sound Bites 5.0 at Signature Theater, 2018. Bystander is published by MTI. He wrote the lyrics and libretto for Pyramid, Blue Cross Blues, and Trifles, all produced at Lincoln Center, and for Lucy/Bluebeard, produced at Theater Row. He wrote lyrics and libretto for Striking Flint, produced at ATHE, and Uncomfortable Sex, produced at The Players Theater. He is currently expanding Striking Flint, about a women's brigade that was active in a strike against General Motors, into a full-length, original musical.

Ed trained at Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop, the Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA), and the Dramatists Guild Institute. His mentor is Kait Kerrigan (The Great Gatsby, The Heart, and many others). His dramaturgs include Kit Goldstein Grant of Paper Kite Arts and Rebecca Lowery of MusicalWriters, Inc. He is a member of The Dramatists Guild, BMI, MusicalWriters, Inc., and CreateTheater.

Ed has a storied past. He started writing songs and musicals at age 15. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Swarthmore College in 1971 and from Columbia Law School in 1975. He then worked as a member of the Directors Guild of America as an Assistant Director on movies including The Wiz, directed by Sidney Lumet with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross; Kramer vs. Kramer, directed by Robert Benton with Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep; Stardust Memories, directed by Woody Allen with Woody Allen and Charlotte Rampling; ...And Justice for All, with Al Pacino; and many more.

After working in the film industry, Ed worked for 30 years in the computer industry, ending his career as a VP at JPMorganChase helping to manage a project to create a world-wide database of all the Derivative Securities holdings in all JPMorganChase Branches, Subsidiaries, and Affiliates. He is currently very happily working full time on creating musicals.
